Eight members of Abu Bakkar's family including his parents, brothers and sisters were killed on the spot by a mortar bomb sent by soldiers of the West African Peace Keeping Forces. The Forces later claimed the bomb missed the target. Abu Bakkar's greatest desire is to further his education. He takes his studies very seriously, never missing a class, even if it means missing the beach or a soccer game. He is rarely seen without a book directly in front of him. He is the captain of the boys soccer team. He will be one of the first boys in the orphanage to live on his own outside the direct care of the orphanage.
